Bananas thrive in tropical and subtropical regions such as Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in China, the Philippines, Okinawa, and other areas across Central and South America. They are perennial herbaceous plants belonging to the genus Musa within the family Musaceae. Today, at least 100 countries worldwide produce bananas, making them the fourth-largest edible crop in terms of economic value—surpassed only by rice, wheat, and corn. Yet, banana farmers, who occupy a disadvantaged position in the industry, continue to struggle for survival despite working under the scorching sun. Meanwhile, vast quantities of discarded stems and leaves lie idle in fields. Although the Kavalan people still preserve the ancient tradition of handcrafting banana fibers and related products, this practice fails to bring significant benefits or commercial value to the majority of banana farmers.

Recognizing the hardships involved, SKT has leveraged discarded stems and leaves as raw materials, using cutting-edge technology to break through the limitations of traditional methods. By integrating biological and physical processes, SKT has successfully achieved mass production of various fiber forms and specifications, including banana filament and spinable fibers. These fibers are easy to dye and can meet the diverse needs of different application fields—ranging from design and art to fashion and apparel.

Unparalleled FiberFromFarm ®The application of BAF banana fiber in textiles is attributed to its hollow microstructure, which facilitates the efficient conduction and dissipation of water and heat, thereby regulating air humidity. It exhibits excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation and bacterial degradation, as well as protection against mold and mites. When arranged in a multidimensional, stacked spatial structure, it proves to be an outstanding natural material for moisture absorption and breathability. Based on this property, it can be used to create warm or cool surface materials.

FiberFromFarm ®The application of PAF pineapple fiber in textiles is also attributable to its cellulose-based structure and its excellent thermal and moisture conductivity, which enables it to effectively absorb moisture and wick away sweat. It exhibits remarkable resistance to UV radiation and bacterial degradation, as well as protection against mold and mites. With its multidimensional, densely packed spatial structure, PAF fiber proves to be an outstanding natural material for moisture absorption and breathability, forming the basis for producing warm or cooling fabric surfaces.

Pineapple fiber

Seikotex ®Using discarded pineapple leaves as raw material, we provide support to the workers and plantations involved, enabling them to jointly mitigate risks and fulfill our corporate social responsibility. We have successfully achieved mass production of various fiber forms and specifications, including pineapple long filaments and spinable fibers, which are easy to dye and meet the diverse needs of different application fields—ranging from design and art to fashion and apparel.

FiberFromFarm ®OSBF flax fiber

Oilseed flax, also known as linseed flax, differs from fiber flax, which is cultivated specifically for textile applications. Oilseed flax is grown primarily to harvest its oil-rich seeds. These flax seeds contain approximately 40% flaxseed oil, renowned for their exceptionally high content—up to 60%—of unsaturated fatty acids. As such, flaxseed oil stands out as a natural plant-based oil with a particularly high omega-3 content, rivaling that of deep-sea fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial to health and are widely used in food, dietary supplements, skincare products, and pharmaceuticals. Oilseed flax is mainly produced in high-altitude, cold, and arid regions such as Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and West Asia. After the flax seeds are harvested, the abundant straw left behind in the fields often goes unused, creating challenges for farming operations and affecting next year’s crop yields. Burning this straw in the fields or using it for heating farmhouses leads to air pollution and even natural disasters. Moreover, those engaged in flax cultivation face significantly lower and more arduous incomes compared to those involved in tropical fruit production.

Deeply aware of the hardships and chronic environmental problems associated with flax fiber production, SKT has taken a unique approach by focusing on the discarded straw from oilseed flax. Specifically, we are dedicated to extracting the small but valuable amount of fiber contained within this waste material, exploring its commercial potential, and using these fibers to benefit agricultural producers and society at large. This initiative will help stabilize the supply of flaxseed oil; reduce the land expansion required for fiber flax and cotton cultivation, as well as the destructive demand for forests driven by the paper industry; and significantly lessen our reliance on finite petroleum resources.

SKT extends its heartfelt gratitude to the pioneers dedicated to environmental protection. From organic practices all the way to advanced, regenerative circular systems, they have been diligently recycling vast quantities of discarded textiles, plastic bottles, fishing nets, and various types of paper—everything that can be reprocessed and reused—from both production sectors and the marketplace. These materials are then transformed once again into everyday products such as clothing, polyester, nylon, and straws—a truly selfless and committed effort! However, the supply of waste materials for regenerative circular systems is inherently limited. After repeated cycles of recycling within the system, material performance gradually degrades and costs rise, making it increasingly difficult to sustain widespread benefits. This critical bottleneck in environmentally friendly development calls for concerted efforts from all sectors to find a solution.

SKT has been deeply reflecting and, inspired by this spirit, is driving a transformative shift in its recycling system by using waste straw from oilseed flax as a raw material to produce FiberFromFarm. ®OSBF flax fiber—turning waste into treasure, from nothing to something.
